MLB Hot Stove Rumors 11/8/12
3 p.m. Eastern
-Ken Rosenthal notes: The Mets have little interest in signing R.A. Dickey to a long-term extension (though a trade probably won’t happen for at least a week) and are discussing him in trades. *The Rangers and Rays are the most realistic options for Justin Upton, with the Yankees likely out and Detroit as a possible dark horse. Atlanta won’t be in either. *Boston does not want to trade Jacoby Ellsbury. *Brett Myers wants to be a starter and Jon Garland is making a comeback.
-Toronto acquired reliever Jeremy Jeffress from Kansas City for cash and designated Scott Maine for assignment. Jeffress has a live arm, but has undergone Tommy John surgery and a pair of drug suspensions.
1 p.m. Eastern
-Toronto signed IF Maicer Izturis to a three-year deal worth $10 million with a fourth year option, Jon Heyman says. Izturis stole 17 bases last season.
-Boston is interested in trading for Cleveland’s Justin Masterson and Shin-Soo Choo, Jon Morosi says.
-MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone says that R.A. Dickey wants a four-year contract extension worth $60 million while the Mets would prefer two years and $30 million. Andy Martino said the team is still debating internally about what they should do.
12:30 p.m. Eastern
-The Mets have little interest in extending R.A. Dickey’s contract and are discussing him with other teams in trade talks, Ken Rosenthal reports. I think it’s absolutely the right move, even if it’s a tough sell for a Mets fan. The team is rebuilding and Dickey is probably not going to be around when this team is contending. It’d be a tough pill to swallow for fans, but the trade return would likely be better for the long haul.
12:05 p.m. Eastern
-Toronto is close to signing IF Maicer Izturis, Jon Heyman reports.
-The Cubs have interest in Jeremy Hellickson, but probably don’t have the trade chips to land him.
-Atlanta could trade pitching for hitting holes, with Minnesota’s Denard Span as a possible target. Josh Willingham could also be possible. B.J. Upton and Shane Victorino are also options, with Angel Pagan likely going back to the Giants.
-Boston is talking with former Yankee and Mariner great Tino Martinez about its hitting coach job.
11:15 a.m. Eastern
-The trade watch for Arizona OF Justin Upton is back on in full force. Texas seems like the main suitor, as they want to replace Josh Hamilton. The Rangers could deal SS Elvis Andrus and replace him with top prospect Jurickson Profar. Tampa Bay is also interested, but they may not have much hitting to trade. Arizona wants a 3B, SS and pitching for Upton, but the Yankees aren’t sure if he’s the right fit for New York.
-Possibilities for Texas include Upton or Hamilton, a starting pitcher like Zack Greinke or Anibal Sanchez or a catcher like Russell Martin or A.J. Pierzynski.
-Baltimore and Seattle could get in on the Hamilton sweepstakes, Jon Heyman says, with the Pirates and Braves as other possibilities. The Baltimore Sun says that the Orioles aren’t likely to land Hamilton.
-Torii Hunter could get two years and $26 million this offseason, with the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, Rangers and Tigers as options. However, Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees will probably be able to offer only one year.
-More Sherman: Yankees OF options could include Scott Hairston, Jonny Gomes or Melky Cabrera. *There will be an LA bidding war for Greinke, though the Dodgers won’t be trading for a starter. *The Reds have interest in Joakim Soria, while the Mariners have been talking trade with the Royals and Twins. Seattle has major league ready pitching prospects and want hitters.
-The Mets seem to be gauging R.A. Dickey’s trade value, Sherman says.
-Toronto could sign IF Maicer Izturis today.
-There’s mounting speculation that there could be a Miami-based BALCO like performance enhancing drug cell after Manny Ramirez, Melky Cabrera and Yasmani Grandal have been caught, Buster Olney reports.
