Royals Acquire Ervin Santana From Angels

The Angels were looking to trade Ervin Santana after a disappointing 2012 season and found a taker in the Kansas City Royals, who will once again acquire a veteran reclamation project to help fill out its starting rotation.

Santana posted a career high 5.16 ERA last season, mainly because he led baseball in home runs allowed with a whopping 39. He posted a 1.27 WHIP, which is below his career average, his 4.48 xFIP suggests that he wasn’t as bad as his dismal numbers would indicate (though 4.48 isn’t great either).I t appears likely that Kansas City will pick up his $13 million contract option for 2013.

In return for Santana, the Angels are receiving 27-year-old AAA lefty reliever Brandon Sisk, according to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi.

Kansas City tried acquiring a veteran starter last offseason, sending Melky Cabrera to the Giants for Jonathan Sanchez. That trade turned out to be a dud for the team, and they traded Sanchez to Colorado in July for fellow struggling starter Jeremy Guthrie. Guthrie went 5-3 in 14 starts with a 3.16 ERA for Kansas City, making the team hopeful that Santana could turn things around in a similar manner.
