Red Sox To Fire Bobby Valentine
After a 90+ loss season, a player revolt and reports that he never even spoke with his first pitching coach, the Boston Red Sox intend to fire manager Bobby Valentine shortly after the end of the regular season, CBS’ Jon Heyman reports.
Red Sox GM Ben Cherington declined to comment. Valentine believes he was “undermined” by his coaching staff this season and regrets comments he made questioning the toughness of veteran Boston star Kevin Youkilis. Youkilis was traded to the White Sox shortly thereafter.
After the late season collapse of 2011, Boston replaced longtime skipper Terry Francona with Valentine, who never seemed to get on the right page with the players, coaches, fans and media. To make matters worse, Valentine crashed his bike earlier this week in New York City’s Central Park while reading a text message from Dustin Pedroia.
