-CBS’ Jon Heyman reports that the Padres are closing in on a contract extension with OF Carlos Quentin that would take him off the trade market. San Diego is also working on a contract extension with closer Huston Street, who’s drawn interest from the Mets, Dodgers and Giants. Quentin is expected to get $27-30 million, Heyman says.
-Nick Cafardo: Boston is not willing to trade what it takes to get Matt Garza just yet. *A large Carl Crawford-Heath Bell/Hanley Ramirez trade doesn’t make sense because Crawford probably needs Tommy John surgery. *Baltimore is looking at Chase Headley. *The Angels don’t want to trade Peter Bourjos but he’s a major negotiating chip. *The Mets have interest in Kelly Shoppach and the Rays like Ramon Hernandez. *Could the Yankees have interest in Alex Gordon? *Baltimore, Kansas City and Detroit have interest in Jason Vargas. *Pittsburgh is interested in Jusitn Upton, Billy Butler and Shane Victorino.
-Arizona will almost certainly trade Justin Upton, says Joel Sherman, and the Yankees have interest. Atlanta also has interest, but it probably means having to trade Martin Prado. Even the Mets would have interest in the offseason, Sherman says. GM Kevin Towers says an Upton trade before the deadline is unlikely. *Nick Swisher is almost certainly leaving the Yankees via free agency.
-Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees are interested in Upton, Shane Victorino and Denard Span but the Twins are asking for a lot.
-The Dodgers have interest in both Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster, Bruce Levine reports.
-Detroit and Arizona have discussed a trade that would include Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Drew, but Jack Magruder says a deal is a long-shot.
-The Cardinals will be deadline buyers. *The Mets will probably be buyers also, depending on what happens in the next week.
