2010 MLB Division Series Stats & Trends

Rangers @ Rays- Rays rotation for the five games: David Price, James Shields, Matt Garza, Wade Davis, David Price. Shields has a 2.57 ERA in two starts against Texas (four other unearned runs). Tampa Bay was 49-32 at home while Texas was 39-42 on the road this season. While David Price (4-0, 1.67) was amazing in September, the rest of the rotation went 4-10 with an ERA over five. Matt Garza is 2-3, 5.88 in his last five starts but is 2-0, 2.84 vs Texas this season. Shields was 0-3, 7.00 in September. Lefty specialist Randy Choate held southpaw batters to a .203 BAA this season. Tampa Bay was third in the AL in runs scored this season and Carl Crawford and BJ Upton combined for 89 steals and the Rays led the bigs with 172 SB’s. Cliff Lee had a 1.93 September ERA but is 0-3, 4.56 against Tampa Bay this season. CJ Wilson held opponents to a .217 BAA this season and Colby Lewis had a .227 BAA. Texas had the second lowest bullpen ERA in the AL. Their lineup was fourth in the AL in runs scored and Josh Hamilton led the majors with a 1.044 OPS. The Rays grounded into 92 double plays this season, the least amount in baseball. While Texas is 26th in baseball at throwing out runners, an MLB best 34 percent of Rays baserunners end up scoring.
Yankees @ Twins- Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano hasn’t allowed a homer to a lefty all season. Brian Duensing has allowed just one. Reliever Brian Fuentes hasn’t allowed a lefty homer since 2008. Yankee OF Marcus Thames is a combined 8-20 lifetime against Liriano and Duensing with three homers off Liriano. Expect him in the game one lineup. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez are a combined 4-25 with 12 strikeouts against Liriano, who has never beat the Yankees. Yankees against Matt Guerrier: Nick Swisher 1-10, Robinson Cano 1-7, Alex Rodriguez 5-7 with four homers. Minnesota had the AL’s best home record this year but are 14-18 vs the AL East. In 28 career game one’s, Derek Jeter is batting .385/.480/.567 with five homers and is batting .447 in Division Series openers. Twins pitchers are among the best at baseball at getting ground ball outs. Minnesota has lost eight of 10 and Liriano has a 3.46 ERA in two starts against the Yanks this season. Carl Pavano had 117 strikeouts in 221 innings this season. Nick Blackburn is 2-0, 3.21 vs the Yankees this season. Yankee starters had a 4.33 ERA this season, 10th in the AL but their bullpen ERA was third in the league. Phil Hughes had a 4.90 ERA after the All-Star Break. The Yankees led the AL in runs scored but are just the second team in MLB history to have seven players with at least 98 strikeouts. Delmon Young’s 110 RBIs is the most by a Twins OF since Kirby Puckett in 1988.

Reds @ Phillies- Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay had 219 strikeouts and only 30 walks this season. Roy Oswalt is 7-1, 1.74 as a Phillie but is 0-2, 6.75 against Cincinnati this season. Cole Hamels had a 2.23 ERA after the All-Star Break with a .214 BAA. Ryan Madsen’s half splits: 6.55 ERA first half, 1.50 second half. Raul Ibanez hit .340 in September. Edinson Volquez had a 1.95 ERA in September. Bronson Arroyo has held righty hitters to a .185 BAA this season. Johnny Cueto has a 1.20 ERA in two starts against the Phils this year. The Reds offense led the NL in homers, slugging percentage and runs scored.
Braves @ Giants- Atlanta leads the majors with 45 come-from-behind wins and 25 wins in their final at bat. The Braves bullpen led the NL with 10.1 k/9 and were second in the NL with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. The Giants’ starting rotation had a 1.72 team ERA in September, the best in baseball. The rotation also had a combined .236 BAA, also the best in the big leagues. Tim Lincecum was 0-5, 7.82 in August but 5-1, 1.94 in September and October. Matt Cain held batters to a .218 BAA this season. Jonathan Sanchez had a 1.17 ERA in September and a 2.63 mark in the second half. Derek Lowe has been 5-0, 1.17 since using the slider more often. Tim Hudson went 1-4, 5.35 in September. In six September starts, Tommy Hanson had a .159 BAA. Atlanta is first in team OBP in the NL but are 11th in homers and 14th in steals.
