NFL Tackling The Issues 8/31

1) Denver has numerous question marks at wide receiver and now starting running back Knowshon Moreno could miss the beginning of the season (though he’ll likely make it for the season opener). How well do you really expect the Broncos to fare this season?
SprungOnSports- With Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler not on the team and first round pick Demariyus Thomas injured, Jabar Gaffney is now the number one receiver and Eddie Royal has seemingly fallen off the face of the earth. Moreno is already hurt and numerous mediocre backs are ready to split the carries. With Elvis Dumervil done for the season, the Broncos won’t be able to generate a pass rush and, in turn, won’t be able to stop people. Only playing four games against the Chiefs and Raiders will save an embarrassing season.
Yaron Weitzman- Not well at all; I’d be shocked if they even got seven wins. The defense was awful in the second half last season, and now will have to continue with out Dumervil and departed coordinator Mike Nolan. The best weapon have on offense is Jabar Gaffney, which could possibly be ok if this was 2002. And it’s not like we are sure that Josh McDaniels knows what he’s doing as a Head Coach. I know their in a weak division, but I think Denver finishes the season fourth in the AFC West.
2) Should second overall pick Ndamukong Suh be suspended for his violent takedown of Jake Delhomme in Saturday’s preseason game?
SprungOnSports-
He should get heavily fined, but a transgression warranting a suspension has to be truly heinous. Not that Suh’s personal foul wasn’t excessive, but I think it has to be really bad for a suspension to be levied given the short length of the season. Albert Haynesworth stepping on Andre Gurode’s face (seriously, what the hell’s wrong with that dude)? Suspension. Suh? Not so much.
Yaron Weitzman- As we learn more and more about the dangers of football, any time we see a player, and especially a quarterback, take a violent hit we’re going to inevitably get to the same question: how much of the violent nature of football should be policed? We all want the players to have and retire with fully functioning bodies and brains, but at the same time football is a violent sport. So was Suh’s takedown of Delhomme dirty? Yes. But many seem to believe that it was also a good football play. Either way it symbolizes the current dilemma that is going on as the NFL tries to protect its product and players.
3) Jacksonville says star RB Maurice Jones-Drew won’t need surgery on his knee but there are clearly injury concerns. If he’s hobbled all year, can the Jags compete and should Jack Del Rio be fired?
SprungOnSports-
Unless David Garrard has a repeat of his 2007 season and Aaron Kampman has between 13-18 sacks, this team has zero shot of winning eight gams. Del Rio hasn’t done a good enough job and the ownership has been worse. So no, the Jaguars won’t compete and JDR will be gone.
Yaron Weitzman- Even if he’s healthy there is no reason to think the Jags can compete. I’m not sure that they have an other real offensive weapons, combine that with an average quarterback and it’s hard to see the Jags making the playoffs. However the defense should be solid after bringing in Aaron Kampan and spending draft picks on the D-line. At best the Jags are about a .500 team, but if MJD misses any time they’ll be in serious trouble.

MLB Series To Watch 8/31-9/2

Phillies @ Dodgers- Philadelphia can’t afford to lose any ground in either of their races and Los Angeles looks to get back in the NL Wild Card race without Manny Ramirez. Roy Oswalt and Clayton Kershaw will start in an interesting Wednesday matinee.
Rockies @ Giants- The red-hot Rockies are now just a half game behind the Giants in the NL West and this game could be a huge momentum shift for both teams. A huge battle of the aces will go down Thursday as Ubaldo Jimenez faces Tim Lincecum.
White Sox @ Indians- Manny Ramirez’s first game with the White Sox will come against his original team, the Indians with Chicago just four games back of first. Edwin Jackson faces Justin Masterson on Tuesday.

MLB Thoughts & Theories 8/31

-The Yankees and Rays both easily fended off foes on Monday, extending their deadlock atop the AL East and the MLB standings to an eighth straight day. New York used a five-run fifth inning to defeat Oakland 11-5 with Marcus Thames hitting a three-run homer in that inning. Thames has now gone deep in three straight games and five of his last six and six homers and 12 RBIs in his last seven games. Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher also drove in three runs each for the Yanks and Mark Teixeira hit his 29th homer of the season. In St. Pete, the Rays scored five early runs off Brett Cecil and cruised to a 6-2 win over Toronto behind a homer and four RBIs from Carlos Pena and 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball from Wade Davis.
-St. Louis has lost three straight, four of five and six of seven to go back a full six games of Cincinnati in the NL Central and three games in the Wild Card. JA Happ pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 3-0 Houston win and the season is quickly slipping away for the Cardinals. Cincinnati got a walkoff single in the 10th from Jay Bruce, who also had three hits and two RBIs, in a 5-4 win over Milwaukee that expanded their comfortable lead to six games. Bruce is 11-23 over his last eight games with five homers and eight RBIs to pace the Reds attack.
-In their first game in the post Manny Ramirez era, Hiroki Kuroda took a no-hitter into the 8th inning and he and Hong-Chih Kuo combined on a one-hit shutout of Philadelphia in a 3-0 win. Newcomer Rod Barajas homered off Roy Halladay in the win that sliced their NL Wild Card deficit to 5.5 games behind the Phillies.
-One team quickly gaining in the standings are the red-hot Colorado Rockies, whose deficit is now just 3.5 games after a 2-1 win over the Giants. Jonathan Sanchez had a shutout through eight but Brian Wilson came in to allow an RBI triple from Carlos Gonzalez to tie the game and then Gonzalez came around to score the winning run on a Freddy Sanchez throwing error. Colorado has won three straight and seven of 10 and could be starting one of those magical late-season runs that have been typical in Denver in August and September over the last few years.
-Philadelphia is now three games behind Atlanta for the NL East lead after the Braves got a homer, four RBIs, four hits and three runs scored by Jason Heyward in a 9-3 win over the Mets. Heyward is making a nice push for the NL Rookie of the Year award and Martin Prado, who went 3-5 with two RBIs, could make a push for the NL batting title with a .316 average.
-San Diego’s huge NL West lead is still five games, but their fifth straight loss has to be a big concern in Padreland. Wade LeBlanc allowed six runs in three innings and Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in five as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 7-2. They’re still a safe bet for the playoffs but momentum is certainly not in their direction.
-Bobby Jenks allowed three runs in the 9th inning in Cleveland to tie the game at six, but a four-run 10th inning bailed him out as the White Sox outlasted the Indians 10-6 to get to four games behind Minnesota in the AL Central. Alex Rios went 5-6 with a homer (his 25th), four RBIs and three runs scored and Paul Konerko had two hits, three walks and three RBIs in the big Chicago win. Jenks’ hold on the team’s closer role should be tenuous at best with 2010 first round draft pick Chris Sale pitching lights out in the 8th inning; he struck out the side on Monday night. With Matt Thornton and JJ Putz on the shelf, the White Sox could use the electrifying Sale as closer as they try to take the Central title.

-Other games: In rain drenched Florida, Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn each hit three-run homers as the Nationals defeated the Marlins 9-3. The Cubs used a seven-run fourth inning to blitz the Pirates 14-2. Carlos Zambrano pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings and hit a two-run homer and Aramis Ramirez drove in four in the win. CJ Wilson pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings as the Rangers shut out the Royals 3-0 to expand their AL West lead to 8.5 games over Oakland. The Angels scored four runs in the sixth inning on three homers to beat Seattle 5-3.

NFL Tackling The Issues 8/30

1) Fox’s Jay Glazer reported that the Jets don’t even know where CB Darrelle Revis is. Will Revis and the Jets really let this drag on into the season and jeopardize what could be a special season?
SprungOnSports- It seems like the sides are far apart, but if they get something done before the weekend then he’ll play the first game. But if Labor Day weekend hits and the Jets don’t give him what he wants, this could drag on for a very long time.
Jason Brand- Jay Glazer is reporting the Jets don’t know where he is, yet this week there were reports saying he was going to sign any day. Whatever is being reported right now in the media should be taken with a grain of salt. I do believe however that Revis will be wearing a Jets uniform by the third game the latest. The Jets know they need Revis and Revis knows he needs the Jets. Revis was a good corner until Rex Ryan turned the spotlight on him and made him great. Revis will not sit out this season risking having to sit out two years in a row with the lockout.
Yaron Weitzman- Unfortunately, it certainly looks like that’s going to be the case. The Jets seem reluctant to budge, and with the guaranteed money that Revis has already lost, I wouldn’t expect him to let up now. That being said, I don’t expect Revis to miss the entire season, and I would be very surprised if he wasn’t back on the field around week 4. He’s going to want to play, and the Jets are going to need him as soon as possible if they want to make the playoffs.
2) With Dallas struggling on offense this preseason, their starters will likely play close to a half on Thursday against Miami. Smart decision?
SprungOnSports-
It’s certainly not the conventional way to go but the way the Cowboys have looked so out of sync on offense against Houston, it’s probably the prudent move to get the first-team offense some confidence and rhythm going into the first game of the regular season.
Jason Brand- It’s only the first half. If they would have played the whole game I would question it a little, but I have no problem having the offense get more reps together to get in sync.
Yaron Weitzman- No. One more half of preseason football isn’t going to make a difference, the only thing that can come from it is injury. The only thing that another half of meaningless vanilla football can lead to is injury, to cohesiveness or productivity.
3) Recently released WR Antonio Bryant could be a good signing for teams like the Rams and Raiders. Would you risk taking a player like Bryant with chronic injury and attitude issues?
SprungOnSports-
If you only give him a minimum salary knowing the Bengals are already on the hook for $8 million guaranteed and Bryant agrees to stay in line and relatively healthy, yeah I’d take a chance. But there are so many variables and caveats involved that he’ll likely stay on the street for a while.
Jason Brand- The question on whether or not to sign Bryant is all about the money. If he will accept a low base offer with incentives, a team like the Rams or Raiders (or Redskins?) should take a fly on him. You can never have too many weapons in the NFL but as in the case for those teams, you need at least one weapon.
Yaron Weitzman- It all depends on the price, and even then I’m not so sure. Bryant is 29 years old with a chronic knee issues-not exactly the traits that teams look for in a wide receiver. But for a team like the Raiders or Rams, a guy like Bryant could for sure be an upgrade over Luis Murphy and Laurent Robinson.
