NFL Training Camp News & Notes 7/27/10

-Though the Bengals are still the frontrunners to land free agent WR Terrell Owens, the Jets reportedly reached out to Owens’ agent Drew Rosenhaus about bringing the controversial receiver into camp, according to Adam Schefter. Although New York’s chances of landing TO are around 20 percent, it would generate even more buzz for a team not lacking hype from the media and the Gang Green fans.
-There was a lot of talk about Wes Welker practicing with the Patriots to open up camp despite his torn ACL in December, but he’ll start on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Whenever Welker is ready to practice, he can go out on the field and do so, but will be counted on the team’s current 80 man roster. Welker was not expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.
-Chargers rookie Ryan Matthews is slated to take on the tough task of replacing LaDanian Tomlinson in San Diego, but he won’t be able to do that just yet. The Bolts opened camp Monday with Matthews still unsigned, making him a holdout. For someone expected to be one of the main focal points in this offense, esepcially with Vincent Jackson suspended the first few games, it’s important to get him locked up and in camp ASAP.
-If Dallas rookie WR Dez Bryant feels he’s above rookie hazing, the Cowboys could be dealing with a certain sense of entitlement that won’t bode well for a positive attitude going forward. Roy Williams had a talk with Bryant after he refused to carry his pads after a practice, a sort of rite of passage for any rookie, and said it was OK but dinners will be getting more expensive for Bryant. Bryant’s attitude will be something to watch throughout camp.
