Hot Stove Update 11/20

2 p.m. Eastern
-The three-team Kevin Millwood, Milton Bradley, Luis Castillo deal won’t happen and the Mets won’t be big players for Roy Halladay or John Lackey, says Jon Heyman. His free-agent primer can be found here. Matt Holliday: Mets, Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Mariners, Yankees. The Cardinals are not considering Jason Bay. John Lackey: Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Mariners, Rangers, Brewers, Angels, Nationals. Chone Figgins may ask for five years and $50 million. Scott Boras wants four years for Johnny Damon, the Yankees want two. The Giants may have interest. Andy Pettitte and Hideki Matsui don’t want to leave the Yankees and Seattle doesn’t seem like an option for Matsui. The Mets would love Orlando Hudson if they can trade Castillo and Washington also really likes Hudson. Philadelphia, Texas and San Francisco make sense for Miguel Tejada. The Phillies seem like the best fit for Mark DeRosa, but 11 other teams are interested. The Mets are an early suitor for Joel Piniero.
-Juan Rivera could be a trade chip for the Angels, with the Tigers as a possibility for Curtis Granderson or Edwin Jackson, says Lyle Spencer.
-Scott Boras told Fox Sports that there has been a lot of interest in Adrian Beltre and Mike Gonzalez.
-The Cubs finalized a two year, $7.5 million deal with lefty reliever John Grabow.
-Kansas City signed Jorge Campillo to a minor league deal.
-John Halama hopes to sign with Milwaukee next week, says Adam McCalvy.
Noon Eastern
-Jayson Stark talks about the inconsistencies with revenue sharing in his latest column, along with some good rumors. Milton Bradley’s top three suitors are the Rays (for Pat Burrell), Texas and Toronto (for Lyle Overbay). But the Cubs don’t want to digest a large amount of his contract, which would be a problem. And if the Cubs take Overbay, they’d have to send Overbay elsewhere. Some ideas include a deal with the Angels for Gary Matthews Jr, a trade for Arizona for Eric Byrnes and a deal for Kevin Millwood with the Cubs including a couple of prospects. Dan Uggla talks heated up with the Giants and Rangers at the GM Meetings but the Marlins won’t deal him unless they get what they want, but then they would have to deal either Jorge Cantu, Ricky Nolasco, Cody Ross or Alfredo Amezaga. The Yankees haven’t ruled out bringing back both Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. There are no signs the Yankees are in on Jason Bay or Matt Holliday. Atlanta wants a cleanup-type hitter for either Javier Vazquez, Derek Lowe or Kenshin Kawakami, which would explain why they didn’t want Corey Hart from the Brewers. Atlanta probably won’t get what it wants. Philadelphia doesn’t have a clear-cut choice at 3B between Mark DeRosa, Adrian Beltre and Placido Polanco. Beltre wants too long of a contract.
-Jason Bay has interest from the Mets, Cardinals, Giants, Blue Jays, Angels and Mariners and wants five years at $17 million per season, according to the Boston Herald. The Red Sox will also go after Matt Holliday and Alex Gonzalez, says the Boston Globe.
-Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Mets, Cubs and Rangers have talked about a three-way deal that would send Kevin Millwood to the Mets, Luis Castillo and prospects to the Cubs, and Milton Bradley and cash to Texas. Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post has heard about it as well. The NY Daily News reports that the Mets may have overestimated other teams’ interest in Castillo. Bengie Molina, Marlon Byrd and Chone Figgins are possibilities for the team besides for Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. The Mets also like John Lackey and Joel Piniero and have not ruled out resigning Carlos Delgado. Paul Lo Duca wants to return to the major leagues.
-The Chicago White Sox are close to a one-year deal with SS Omar Vizquel, says Ken Rosenthal.
-The Angels want Jason Bay but not Matt Holliday and probably won’t bring back both John Lackey and Chone Figgins together, says the LA Times.
-Another NY Daily News article says the Yankees want to resign Johnny Damon for two years and they want a faster decision from Andy Pettitte than in previous offseasons. Hideki Matsui’s time as a Yankee is likely over. If Damon leaves, Matsui could be brought back. The Yankees will probably not deal Nick Swisher, says the New York Post.
-Milwaukee will try and lock Prince Fielder up to a long term deal this winter, says Jon Heyman. Heyman also says Seattle is still talking to Detroit about a trade for Edwin Jackson.
-Fox Sports reports that the Mariners may move Jose Lopez to first next season and sign a 2B like Polanco or Orlando Hudson.
-If the Yankees non-tender starter Chien-Ming Wang, he would be interested in the Dodgers, says Diamond Leung.
-Detroit will try to bring back SS Adam Everett, says the Detroit News. They won’t try to bring back Jarrod Washburn or Aubrey Huff.  The Twins like Washburn along with Carl Pavano and Rich Harden, says the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
-Colorado is looking for a team to trade Garrett Atkins to, according to the Denver Post. They’re working on an extension for Clint Barmes.
-Aaron Heilman’s trade from the Cubs to the Diamondbacks for 24-year-old solid lefty reliever Scott Maine (AA-AAA) and decent 23-year-old contact hitting 1B Ryne White (Advanced-A) is a nice haul for the Cubs and gives Arizona different options depending where they want to use Heilman.
-The Padres will spend some money in free agency but stay in the $40 million range, says Corey Brock.

NBA Week In Preview

TNT’s Dynamite Performers- At 3-8, the Hornets needed a spark to resurrect their season with Chris Paul out. They won over the Clippers on Tuesday night, but hosted the NBA-best Suns on Thursday. Peja Stojakovic came through with a huge performance, hitting 7 of 11 from beyond the arc and scoring 25 points and pulling down 13 rebounds in a 110-103 victory over Phoenix despite 23 from Amare Stoudamire. The Lakers were able to gain ground in the Pacific Division led by 24 and 13 from a returning Pau Gasol and 21 from Kobe Bryant in a 108-93 win over Chicago. The Bulls are struggling at 6-5.

Robert Frost Report
Fire- Atlanta, Dallas, Orlando, Dirk Nowitzki, Allen Iverson’s PR department.
Ice- New Jersey, Minnesota, Charlotte, Detroit, Golden State, Toronto, San Antonio.

SprungOnSports’ Friday Top 10
1) Atlanta Hawks 10-2 (6)- The Hawks have won six straight and have one of the deepest benches in the league led by Jamal Crawford, who has settled quite nicely into his complimentary role.
2) Phoenix Suns 10-3 (2)- Before their loss to New Orleans on Thursday, the Suns have been back to their high flying ways and getting great scoring balance. Alvin Gentry would get my coach of the year vote so far.
3) Dallas Mavericks 9-3 (9)- The four game winning streak puts Dallas ahead of the other 9-3 teams and the backcourt of Jason Kidd and Roddy Beaubois has been tremendous so far.
4) LA Lakers 9-3 (2)- The win over Chicago should be a sign of things to come with Pau Gasol back in the lineup. Fourth will probably be this team’s floor.
5) Orlando Magic 9-3 (10)- Rashard Lewis’ return will be huge for an Orlando team on a three-game winning streak, and the signing of Jason Williams looks clutch with Jameer Nelson injured again.
6) Boston Celtics 9-3 (1)- Losses to Atlanta and Indiana were the reasons for their free-fall in the SOS Top 10, and a win over Orlando on Friday night will shoot them right back up.
7) Denver Nuggets 8-3 (8)- Last week’s win over the Lakers was enormous for the confidence of this team, and an easy upcoming schedule should have this team’s climb continuing.
8-) Portland TrailBlazers 9-4 (5)- Barely beating Charlotte and Detroit is not very impressive, and their loss to Atlanta keeps this team down. But the schedule is also kind for Portland this coming week.
9) Cleveland Cavaliers 8-4 (4)- The Cavs took an embarrasing loss to the Wizards on Wednesday night that lost them several spots in the rankings, but Cleveland looks like a team that will bounce back from this.
10) Milwaukee Bucks 6-3 (N/R)- Brandon Jennings 55 point outburst last week definitely helps the Bucks reach the top 10, but they’re a Dirk Nowitzki buzzer beater in OT and a two point loss to Chicago away from an eight game winning streak.
Removed From Rankings- Miami- 7-4 (7)

Week In Preview
Friday- 10 games on the schedule is led by an ESPN doubleheader featuring an East semifinals rematch of Orlando and Boston at 8 followed by the Nuggets taking on the Clippers. Nationally in Canada, Toronto hosts Miami on TSN2. Cleveland will be at Indiana and Houston will visit Atlanta in other games of significance.
Saturday- Washington is really struggling, as is San Antonio, and the two teams will play each other as the NBATV feature game at 8:30 eastern from the AT&T. The Knicks and Nets will play to see who is the least pathetic, Atlanta plays at New Orleans, Chicago will be at Denver and Detroit plays at Utah to see who can snap out of their funk fastest.
Sunday- Boston continues its Floriday foray by visiting the Heat as the NBATV feature game at 6 eastern. Toronto hosts Phoenix nationally in Canada on CBC at 3:30 eastern. Hawks-Pistons, Sixers-Spurs and Rockets-Thunder are other games of mild relevance.
Monday- The Warriors play their first national TV game without Stephen Jackson at 10:30 eastern at home against Indiana on NBATV. Chicago will be at Milwaukee in the only other important game.
Tuesday- Mike D’Antoni plays his former team, the Suns, Miami will be at Portland and the Lakers host the Hornets in the evening’s important games.
Wednesday- 10 games grace the schedule the night before Thanksgiving, led by an 8 and 10:30 NBATV doubleheader with Philadelphia visiting Oklahoma City and the Rockets facing the Clippers. Raptors-Hawks, Suns-Cavs, Pistons-Bulls and Pacers-Kings are other good games.
Thursday- Celebrate Turkey Day with a huge TNT doubleheader led by the Celtics at the Spurs at 8 eastern and the Heat and Nuggets at 10:30.

SprungOnSports’ Week 11 Picks ATS

Dallas (+11) over Washington- The Cowboys came up flat and got dominated last week by Green Bay, but should come up firing against a Redskins team that will probably still be without Clinton Portis. Washington got a huge win over Denver last week after Kyle Orton left the game with an ankle injury. Tony Romo should have a huge game for Dallas in a convincing win over their bitter rivals.
Detroit (+3.5) over Cleveland- The Lions failed the last time they played a horrible Rams team at home, but the Browns are a whole other level of bad. Calvin Johnson is back at full strength, Kevin Smith should do very well and Cleveland’s offense is completely inept. Detroit should come away with the win.
Green Bay over San Francisco (49ers cover 6.5 point spread)- The Packers defense was incredible last week against Dallas but their offense only managed 17 points. The Niners defense has been quite strong of late the San Francisco can get some things done in the running game. But the quick slants Green Bay loves to employ should pay huge dividends and get them the win, but not by more than a TD.
Pittsburgh (+10) over Kansas City- If the Steelers want any shot at the AFC North crown, this is a must-win game, and they will play like it in KC, where Jamaal Charles will play the Pittsburgh run defense and have virtually no chance to succeed. Kansas City does play hard at home but Ben Roethlisberger and that offense should be on a mission to avenge their loss to Cincinnati.
Minnesota (+10.5) over Seattle- I’m pretty sure Seattle starting RB Justin Forsett has never played a run defense as good as the Vikings, and the Seahawks will have to rely on Matt Hasselbeck to win the game. Seattle has given up big yardage through the air over the last couple of games and this week against Brett Favre should be no different. Unless, of course, Adrian Peterson gashes them for 150 yards, which is always a possibility.
NY Giants over Atlanta (Falcons cover the 6.5 point spread)- A lot of people, especially around New York, are giving the Giants an easy win since Michael Turner will be a non-factor in the game. But those people have not seen how capable Jason Snelling is as a running back, and he can keep Atlanta in the game and allow them to keep a good run/pass balance. If Eli Manning has time to throw, he can have a very good game against the Falcons secondary, and that’s the reason they’ll ultimately win the game, but it will be close throughout.
New Orleans over Tampa Bay (Buccaneers cover the 11.5)- I’ve picked the Saints to cover games like this before and have lost, so I’m going to change it up and say that the Bucs show something here, especially if New Orleans decides to sit some of their questionable players on defense, which would make things a lot easier for Josh Freeman. Drew Brees should go off as usual, it’s just a matter of how well Tampa will play and hold the ball so the Saints can’t run up the score.
Jacksonville (+9) over Buffalo- While the Jaguars are riding high after a pivotal win against the Jets, Buffalo is in its first week after a coaching change and will bench starting QB Trent Edwards. Maurice Jones-Drew should have a great day on the ground, and those few people who actually show up for Jags home games should be in for a nice win over the Bills.
Indianapolis (+1) over Baltimore- Peyton Manning should be under constant pressure all day from the Baltimore defense, and the Colts may have some problems dealing with a Joe Flacco-led Ravens offense that can fly high if the QB is well protected. But Indianapolis is coming in with too much momentum to lose the game. Baltimore’s last big statement win was over Denver, but the Colts are a couple of levels above that. Indy plus one.
Arizona (+9) over St. Louis- While the Rams showed a lot in covering the spread, and nearly beating the Saints in the process, the Cardinals remain unbeaten on the road and Kurt Warner should feel right at home at the Edward Jones Dome. Look for Warner to have a huge day and for an underrated Arizona run defense to stuff Steven Jackson and blow St. Louis out.
San Diego (+1) over Denver- It won’t be easy, even with Chris Simms at QB for the Broncos, but the Chargers will take control of the AFC West with a win in Denver. LaDanian Tomlinson is the key to this football game, and he seems to be inspired after his performance last week against the Eagles. Denver will need a huge day from the running game with Knowshon Moreno and Correl Buckhalter to stick around, but it will be the San Diego pass attack that wins this game.
Cincinnati (+9.5) over Oakland- This is a risky pick with Cedric Benson out, but the insertion of Bruce Gradkowski at QB should offset that loss pretty easily. The Bengals should be able to stop Michael Bush, Justin Fargas and the returning Darren McFadden and Carson Palmer should play well enough for Cincinnati to cover the spread.
New England over NY Jets (Jets cover 10.5 point spread)- Both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses and the teams almost always play each other quite close, so the spread is way too large for this game. But the Patriots did an excellent job on offense last week and should continue to put up points against a Jets team that has had trouble sustaining pressure. New England will employ quick passes to offset the Jets pressure they showed in the first game and will be successful. Mark Sanchez has been making some mistakes with the ball and should make some more this week, but the Jets will find a way to keep it close enough.
Philadelphia (+3) over Chicago- The scheduling gods have been cruel to the Bears, putting Jay Cutler in another prime time game, where he always seems to melt under the bright lights, and the opportunistic Eagles defense, and the big play ability of the Eagles offense should be flying high against a Bears team that will have a coach firmly on the hot seat after another loss.
