College Hoops: Friday’s Five Biggest Stories
There really were 126 games on the schedule on Friday, the official real start to the season after the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic earlier in the week.
-Xavier Henry dropped 27 in his first collegiate game on Hofstra as top ranked Kansas opened up their season at Allen Fieldhouse with a 101-65 win over Hofstra. Sherron Collins had 23.
-For all the talk about heralded frosh John Wall, who did not play, it was teammate Eric Bledsoe that stole the show in Kentucky’s first game under John Calipari, scoring 24 points and grabbing seven boards in a big win over Morehead State at Rupp.
-13th ranked Washington got a battle in Seattle against Wright State, but freshman Isaiah Thomas scored 30 as the Huskies squeaked by Wright State just 74-69. It’ll be a work in progress for Lorenzo Romar’s young squad.
-Mississippi State did not have hyped freshman Renardo Sidney in the lineup, but the Bulldogs still had high expectations going into their opener against Rider. The Broncs proceeded to hit 10 of their 16 three pointers and upset Miss. St 88-74 despite 22 and 14 from Bulldog beast Jarvis Vanardo.
-Playing in Lubbock in what was essentially a road game for the Beavers, Oregon State got absolutely hammered by Texas A&M Corpus Christi 67-43 in the worst loss by a major conference team thus far, though the Mississippi State game is more disappointing.
