World Series Notes & Quotes
The rain has stopped pouring on the greatest city in the world, and the field should be ready for game one of the 2009 World Series between the defending champion Phillies and the AL champion Yankees.
UPDATE- Phillies lineup from Todd Zolecki: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez DH, Francisco LF, Feliz 3B, Ruiz C.
-Jimmy Rollins had a poor regular season, but the 2007 NL MVP has picked up his play in the postseason and predicted his Phillies to win this season in 5. “This is like taking on the biggest assignment you ever had. It’s definitely a challenge. Going to be a lot of fun.” Rollins told reporters, including AOL FanHouse’s Jeff Fletcher. The fun he’s having will really begin when he steps up to the dish against CC Sabathia tonight.
-Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland seems to be saying all the right things before the series, but I wonder how much control he actually has in the dugout with Joe Girardi micromanaging his bullpen like a day trader who had an unfortunate run-in with an exorcist. ”They are the defending world champs… If we want to be the best in the world, we got to beat them, because right now they are.” Eiland said.
-For all you people who were looking forward to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performing/lip synching “Empire State of Mind”, you’ll have to wait another day before game two. Rain and electrical equipment don’t mix, as MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch pointed out.
-Twitpic posted about 15 minutes ago from the Yankee Stadium press box from Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki. He also says that Raul Ibanez will be the game one DH and Ben Francisco will bat 7th in LF.
-Ed Price points out that this is the 2nd time in World Series history that two Cy Young winners are matching up in Game One, the other being Greg Maddux and Atlanta against Orel Hershiser and Cleveland in 1995.
-SI.com’s Jon Heyman has more notes. Enjoy game one, my biased opinion says Yankees in six.
